Saath Phere in Different Indian Regional Weddings
North Indian Weddings (Punjabi, Gujarati, Marwari, Hindi)
The groom takes the first 4 pheras and the bride takes the last 3 pheras. This shows they will support and lead each other whenever needed.
Bengali Wedding (Saptapadi)
Instead of just walking around fire, 7 betel leaves are placed on the floor. The bride steps on each leaf one by one. The groom moves a grinding stone (nora) with his toe. There is also a fun ritual called “Saath Pak” where the bride is lifted and taken around the groom.
Odia Wedding
Seven small piles of rice are made on the ground. The bride breaks each pile with her right foot. This symbolises facing all difficulties together. Puffed rice is then offered to the fire.
South Indian Weddings (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayali)
Called Saptapadi. It is performed after exchanging garlands. After the seven rounds, the groom puts silver toe rings on the bride’s feet.
Sikh Wedding (Anand Karaj)
Only 4 Laavaan (rounds) are taken around the holy book Guru Granth Sahib Ji instead of fire.
